Pre-COCOBOD

A unit under the department of Agriculture in 1945, had the responsibility of controlling CSSVD, Cocoa Pests and create cocoa stations. Within these stations, seeds will be multiplied, seedlings raised and farmers educated on the correct method of cocoa cultivation.

July 1979 the Cocoa Production Division which was created as Cocoa Division in 1972 and renamed Cocoa Production Division under the newly created Ministry of Cocoa Affairs, was placed under the management of COCOBOD in 1985 after the Ministry of Cocoa Affairs was dissolved.

Restructuring

Cocoa Production Division was renamed Cocoa Services Division (CSD) with three (3) clear functions: To control the spread of the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease (CSSVD), To produce and supply hybrid seed pods to farmers (Cocoa Agronomy) and to educate farmers on approved agronomic and cultural practices in cocoa cultivation (Cocoa Extension).

Emergence of Seed Production Unit - (SPU)

Re-organisation of the Agricultural sector, saw the CSD dissolved and Cocoa Extension unified with the mainstream department of Agricultural Extension Service of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA). Seed Production Unit (SPU) and Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Control Unit (CSSVDCU) were created in January 2001. The SPU was responsible for multiplication and distribution of planting materials of Cocoa and Coffee and pursue soil fertility improvement programmes.

Corporate restructuring

In July, 2015, SPU was upgraded to a Division and renamed Seed Production Division (SPD) to reflect its technically operations/activities. In November the same year, SPD was given additional responsibility for Coffee planting material multiplication and extension.

SPD has ever since expanded its operations to cover all Districts and Stations within the country.
